Wisconsin Governor Nominee Tom Tiffany Swims to Safety After Lake Landing
Rep. Tom Tiffany and his pilot lost power on approach to Wausau Downtown Airport Saturday night, landed a four seat Bonanza in Lake Wausau, and swam to shallow water with minor injuries. Fifty one days remain until Election Day.

What happened on Lake Wausau
Representative Tom Tiffany, the Republican nominee for Wisconsin governor, said he and his pilot swam to safety after their aircraft lost power and made an emergency water landing on Lake Wausau late Saturday, September 12, 2026 (Reuters, September 13, 2026; CNN, September 13, 2026; New York Times, September 13, 2026). Tiffany said he was returning from the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner when the plane lost power on approach to Wausau Downtown Airport. The pilot put the aircraft down in the lake (Reuters, September 13, 2026; WSAW, September 13, 2026).
After landing, they called 911. As the plane began to submerge, they exited and swam to a shallow area until first responders reached them by boat (Tiffany statement via Reuters and CNN, September 13, 2026). Wausau Fire Department and other agencies transported both men to Aspirus Wausau Hospital. Tiffany said both sustained only minor injuries (CBS News, September 13, 2026; WJFW, September 13, 2026).
The aircraft and the response
Local outlets identified the aircraft as a four seat Bonanza (WSAW, September 13, 2026; WBAY, September 13, 2026). Marathon County Sheriff's Office said a private plane went down in Lake Wausau around 9 p.m. local time. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Wisconsin State Patrol also responded. The investigation was handed to the Federal Aviation Administration (WSAW, September 13, 2026; CBS News, September 13, 2026).
Tiffany thanked the pilot, the Wausau Fire Department, and the responders who reached them quickly. He said he was grateful to be in the hospital with his wife, Chris, and that the experience reminded him how precious life is (Tiffany statement via Just the News and WJFW, September 13, 2026). Democratic nominee David Crowley, the Milwaukee County Executive, said he was grateful Tiffany and no one else was hurt and credited the pilot's heroism (CBS News, September 13, 2026).
Where the Wisconsin race stood before the landing
Tiffany represents Wisconsin's Seventh Congressional District, won the Republican nomination in August, and carries an endorsement from President Donald Trump (Reuters, September 13, 2026). He faces Crowley on November 3 for the open governorship after Gov. Tony Evers declined a third term (New York Times Wisconsin governor poll page, updated September 11, 2026).
The first Marquette Law School poll after the August 11 primaries, fielded August 12 to 20 among 738 likely voters, put Crowley at 49 percent and Tiffany at 44 percent, with 7 percent undecided (Marquette Law School via Wisconsin Examiner and WKOW, August 26, 2026). Among registered voters in that survey the candidates tied at 44 percent (Wisconsin Examiner, August 26, 2026). A Badger Battleground poll of 500 likely voters on August 12 to 13 put Crowley at 48 percent and Tiffany at 44 percent (WisPolitics, August 17, 2026). A TIPP Insights survey of likely voters August 14 to 18 put Crowley at 47 percent and Tiffany at 43 percent (New York Times poll table, September 11, 2026).
How this sits on the midterm board
Our board of 2026 governor races ranks open and competitive governorships by published flip likelihood. Wisconsin is a battleground state Trump carried by about 0.9 points in 2024, and the post primary polling average has stayed inside a few points either way (270toWin Wisconsin governor polls; Pollsmax forecast page, September 13, 2026). Saturday's landing does not rewrite those tables. It does put a named candidate, a named airport approach, and a named hospital discharge path on the same calendar as a race still decided by voters.
Fifty one days remain until Election Day. RealClearPolitics and independent aggregators still show a Democratic lean on the national House generic ballot near 6 to 7 points entering mid September, while Republicans hold the Senate 53 to 47 and Democrats still need a net gain of four Senate seats for majority control (USPollingData, September 13, 2026; Cook Political Report Senate arithmetic). Score the rescue. Score the polls. Leave November 3 to the canvass.
What is settled and what is not
Settled on the public record Sunday morning: both men reached shore, both were treated for minor injuries, local agencies marked the submerged aircraft, and the FAA owns the cause inquiry (WSAW, September 13, 2026; Reuters, September 13, 2026). Settled on the campaign calendar: Tiffany remains the Republican nominee and Crowley remains the Democratic nominee for an open Wisconsin governorship (Reuters, September 13, 2026).
Still open: the mechanical cause of the power loss, any effect on Tiffany's remaining travel schedule, and whether the next high quality Wisconsin poll moves from the late August Crowley edge. Those are separate instruments. Print the lake landing as a human fact. Print the Marquette and Badger numbers as civic facts. Keep both parties on one ruler.
