Trump Floats Federal Gas Tax Suspension as AAA Prints $4.37 and SLF Books $5 Million in South Carolina
On October 6 President Trump said his administration is thinking about suspending the 18.4 cent federal gasoline tax, AAA put the national average near $4.37 a gallon, and the Senate Leadership Fund planned a $5 million South Carolina buy with 27 days left to Election Day.
Federal fuel tax and national pump
The pump number and the tax number on the same day
President Trump told reporters on October 6 that the White House is thinking about suspending the federal gasoline tax as fuel costs pressure his party four weeks from the midterms (Reuters, October 6, 2026; Financial Times, October 6, 2026). The federal levy is 18.4 cents a gallon on gasoline and 24.4 cents on diesel. Suspending it requires an act of Congress. AAA put the national average for regular near $4.37 a gallon on Monday and about $4.3685 on Tuesday in Guardian and Bloomberg summaries, more than a dollar above the year earlier print (The Guardian, October 6, 2026; Bloomberg via Yahoo Finance, October 6, 2026).
Newsweek estimated a full suspension would cut roughly 4 percent from the price of a gallon at current averages (Newsweek, October 7, 2026). The tax brings in more than $23 billion a year for highways and transit (The Guardian, October 6, 2026). Score the cents, the dollars, and the calendar on the same clipboard as Senate races 2026.
Diesel order Monday, gas tax talk Tuesday
A day earlier Trump signed an executive order expanding access to tax free dyed diesel for on road use through year end, unveiled from a Nebraska rally stage (Reuters, October 6, 2026; Associated Press via Big Country News, October 7, 2026). Several states have already moved on their own fuel taxes. Coverage named Georgia, Indiana, Ohio, and Utah among those suspending or cutting state gasoline taxes under election pressure (Big Country News, October 7, 2026). Ohio lawmakers approved a 90 day gas tax holiday after both major party governor candidates called for relief.
Reuters Ipsos put Trump's approval near a record low 32 percent in fieldwork completed Monday, with Americans citing the high cost of living led by gasoline and diesel (Reuters, October 6, 2026). That is a national mood instrument. It is not a district result. Pair it with most competitive House districts 2026 and with kitchen table prices that do not wait for a conference report.
Bloomberg noted both chambers have already left Washington to campaign, which makes a pre election federal tax suspension an unlikely legislative sprint even if the White House keeps talking about it (Bloomberg via Yahoo Finance, October 6, 2026). That constraint belongs on the board next to the 18.4 cent figure. A speech can float a number. Only a statute moves the levy. State level holidays in Georgia, Indiana, Ohio, and Utah show governors and legislatures acting inside their own calendars while the federal conversation stays unfinished (Big Country News, October 7, 2026).
Five million dollars in a state Trump won by seventeen
While the White House talked about the pump, the Senate Leadership Fund planned $5 million for Sen. Darline Graham (R) in South Carolina against pediatrician Annie Andrews (D), confirmed to NBC News and the Associated Press after Axios first reported the outlay (NBC News, October 6, 2026; Associated Press, October 6, 2026). Trump carried the state by more than 17 points in 2024. Graham led by about 2.4 points in a RealClearPolitics average cited Tuesday (Daily Caller, October 6, 2026). Sources called the spend an insurance policy. The same PAC had already paused North Carolina ads and diverted resources toward Kansas (New York Times, October 5 to 6, 2026).
Cook Political Report the same day moved Kansas to Toss Up, New Hampshire to Lean Democrat, and North Carolina to Likely Democrat, and raised its Democratic pickup band to two to six seats (Cook Political Report, October 6, 2026). Cash and ratings moved together. Neither finishes the canvass.
What an honest American board still shows
Read every row. A federal tax cut of 18.4 cents is real relief if Congress passes it and stations pass it through. It is also a Highway Trust Fund hole measured in billions. A $4.37 national average is painful and still lower than some local diesel prints that topped $6 earlier in the crisis cycle. A $5 million South Carolina buy can be both confidence and fear. Cook's two to six pickup range can still leave either party with the Senate depending on Maine, Michigan, and the Trump 2024 states now rated Toss Up.
Twenty seven days remain. Watch whether Congress returns for a tax bill before November 3. Watch whether AAA's national average breaks lower after the diesel order and any tax talk. Watch whether South Carolina's 2.4 point edge widens after the new ads. Interlink governor races 2026 where state fuel holidays already landed, and keep Senate races 2026 open. Americans still fill tanks, still mail ballots, and still decide the only score that sticks.
Financial Times and NBC coverage the same week kept fuel prices next to Latino swing voters and red state Senate polls without pretending one instrument cancels another (Financial Times, October 6, 2026; NBC News NOW Decision 2026, October 7, 2026). Steve Kornacki's midterm boards still start with prices and turnout. So should ours. Put the AAA average beside Cook's Kansas Toss Up and the South Carolina insurance buy. An American who wants the country to work can want cheaper fuel and still demand that every claim carry a citation. That is the house rule at Senate races 2026.
