One series hit a new low. The wider board did not collapse to that row.

A Focaldata survey for the Financial Times, fielded August 28 to September 1 among 1,914 registered voters, put President Donald Trump's job approval at 33 percent, down three points from the prior month and the lowest reading since that series began in May (Financial Times, September 6, 2026; The Independent, September 7, 2026). The margin of error was plus or minus 2.6 points (Financial News summary of the FT/Focaldata release, September 7, 2026).

That is one dated instrument. It is not the entire American scoreboard. Aggregators updated September 6 show a wider spread: Ballotpedia at 41.0 percent, RealClearPolitics at 39.8, Decision Desk HQ at 39.4, Silver Bulletin at 38.8, The New York Times at 38.0, VoteHub at 38.5, Race to the WH at 36.9, FiftyPlusOne at 35.9, CNN at 35.0, and The Economist at 35.0, for a simple average near 37.8 percent approve against about 58.6 percent disapprove (Wikipedia compilation of nationwide job approval aggregators, updated September 6, 2026). Rasmussen Reports' daily tracker for Monday, September 7, printed 43 percent approve and 57 percent disapprove among likely voters (Rasmussen Reports, September 7, 2026).

What the FT crosstabs actually say about the economy

Nearly two thirds of registered voters in the FT/Focaldata wave said the economy was heading in the wrong direction. Fifty seven percent said they were financially worse off under the Trump presidency, up four points from 53 percent the month before (Financial Times, September 6, 2026). Among Republican voters, 53 percent approved of the president's handling of jobs and the economy, a drop of nearly eight points from the prior month (Financial Times, September 6, 2026; Daily Beast summary, September 7, 2026).

On trade, 56 percent of registered voters, including more than 60 percent of independents and nearly one third of Republicans, disapproved of a 50 percent tariff on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods (Financial Times, September 6, 2026). Forty seven percent of independent voters said they were less likely to vote for candidates endorsed by Trump (Financial News summary, September 7, 2026). Those are named shares from a named survey. They are not a finished midterm.

Other recent prints belong on the same clipboard

NBC's Meet the Press on September 6 cited a Decision Desk poll of adults putting Trump's job approval at 36 percent (NBC Meet the Press transcript, September 6, 2026). A University of Massachusetts Amherst poll in August had printed 32 percent (Daily Beast citing UMass Amherst, September 7, 2026). ABC News's early September midterm wrap put approval near 36 percent and noted the figure was down slightly from 37 percent in June and well below the 42 percent who approved when he took office (ABC News, September 6, 2026).

Friday's Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment Situation still sits on the same desk: 162,000 jobs added in August, unemployment at 4.1 percent, and June and July revised up by a combined 55,000 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, September 4, 2026). Approval polls and payroll prints answer different questions. Stack them. Cite them. Do not mash them into a single mood.

How the midterm instruments connect

Presidential approval is one of the most watched predictors of midterm seat change for the president's party. US Political Rank's ranking of presidents by economic record and the live boards for 2026 Senate races and most competitive House districts are built to keep those instruments separate from campaign rhetoric.

Rasmussen's early September generic congressional ballot update put Democrats ahead 46 percent to 41 percent, a five point edge, after a four point edge in July (Rasmussen Reports, September 2, 2026). A September aggregator reading of the generic ballot has put Democrats near 47.8 percent and Republicans near 41.5 percent, a lead near 6.3 points (US Polling Data September 2026 generic ballot summary). Charlie Cook's early September House column still framed Republican loss bands rather than a single prophecy (Charlie Cook Politics, September 3, 2026). Democrats need a small net House gain for a majority and a net gain of four Senate seats for majority control in 2027 (US Political Rank Senate and House boards).

What fifty seven days leave unsettled

The honest American frame is the full table. The Financial Times series printed 33 percent approval, its own low since May. Aggregators updated September 6 average near 38 percent. Rasmussen's Monday tracker printed 43 percent. Meet the Press cited 36 percent among adults. August payrolls still showed job growth and a 4.1 percent unemployment rate. Generic ballot averages still show a Democratic lead measured in single digits, not a finished House.

Celebrate a country that can publish competing surveys, payroll revisions, and race ratings in public before anyone votes. Do not cherry pick the gloomiest row and call it the nation. Do not invent a victory from the highest tracker either. Fifty seven days remain until November 3. New Hampshire names Senate nominees tomorrow. The same ruler applies to every party and every pollster. The certified count is still the only instrument that fills a chair.
