Maine Senate Stays Inside Four Points as Sanders Joins Jackson on Solidarity Forever Tour
A Washington Post-Schar School poll put Troy Jackson at 50 percent and Sen. Susan Collins at 46 among likely voters. Rasmussen later printed Jackson 49, Collins 47. Bernie Sanders headlined Bangor, Lewiston, and Biddeford stops with 22 days left until November 3.
Maine Senate recent public polls
A four point race that can decide the chamber
Democrat Troy Jackson leads Republican Sen. Susan Collins 50 percent to 46 percent among 800 likely Maine voters in a Washington Post-Schar School survey conducted September 30 to October 5, with a margin of error of 3.6 points (Washington Post, October 9, 2026). Rasmussen Reports, fielding October 5 to 8 among 804 likely voters, put Jackson at 49 and Collins at 47, a two point edge inside a three point margin (Rasmussen Reports, October 2026). Marist among registered voters printed Jackson 51, Collins 47 (RealClearPolitics Maine Senate table, October 2026).
Those prints matter because Democrats need a net gain of four Senate seats for a majority while Republicans hold 53 and the vice president breaks ties (Cook Political Report, October 6, 2026). Maine is one of Cook's seven Toss Up races on the current Senate board (Cook Political Report Senate ratings, October 6, 2026). Keep the state next to our full board on Senate races 2026. A four point lead is a temperature. A canvass is the finish.
What voters reward and what they still credit Collins for
The Post-Schar survey found likely voters preferred Jackson on abortion, cost of living, and health care, while Collins held a 24 point advantage on bringing federal dollars to Maine (Washington Post, October 9, 2026; Bangor Daily News summarizing the same poll, October 9, 2026). Fifty two percent said Collins's 30 years in the Senate was a bad thing, and 58 percent said she was too supportive of President Trump, whose Maine approval sat at 36 percent in the same survey (The Hill summarizing Post-Schar, October 9, 2026).
Jackson led independents 53 to 40 in that poll and drew 9 percent of Republicans while Collins drew 6 percent of Democrats (Portland Press Herald summarizing Post-Schar, October 9, 2026). Rasmussen found women favoring Jackson 53 to 43 and men favoring Collins 51 to 45, a net gender gap of 16 points (Rasmussen Reports, October 2026). Those are issue and coalition rows, not verdicts. Collins remains chair of Senate Appropriations and has outperformed polls in prior cycles. Print both the issue edges and the federal dollars edge. Leave the sample ballot to the voter.
Sanders on the trail, Obama on the record, markets on the price
Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont joined Jackson for a three stop Solidarity Forever tour over the weekend, with rallies in Bangor on Saturday and Lewiston and Biddeford on Sunday (Bangor Daily News, October 10, 2026; Portland Press Herald, October 11, 2026; WMTW, October 11, 2026). Sanders told Bangor that the Maine result could decide Senate control (WABI, October 10, 2026). Former President Barack Obama endorsed Jackson on Thursday ahead of the tour (Bangor Daily News, October 10, 2026).
Prediction markets on October 12 priced Democratic Senate control at 62 percent on Kalshi and 64 percent on Polymarket, with House Democratic control at 90 percent on both venues (Sikt Intelligence, October 12, 2026). Cook's October 6 Senate overview set a Democratic pickup band of two to six seats after moving Kansas to Toss Up and upgrading New Hampshire and North Carolina (Cook Political Report, October 6, 2026). Maine sits inside that band as a Republican held Toss Up. Pair the tour coverage with battleground states 2026 and with the chamber odds, without pretending a rally finishes a canvass.
Jackson replaced Graham Platner on the Democratic line in July after Platner withdrew amid assault allegations that he denied, a late nominee swap that forced Democrats to rebuild enthusiasm on a compressed calendar (Bangor Daily News, October 10, 2026; Newsweek, October 10, 2026). Sanders had backed Jackson in an earlier gubernatorial primary and returned for the Solidarity Forever stops once Jackson became the Senate nominee (Politico itinerary coverage, October 2, 2026; Bangor Daily News, October 10, 2026). The tour is a turnout tool aimed at the progressive base in a state where independents remain decisive. It is not a substitute for the Post-Schar independent lead of 53 to 40, and it is not a rebuttal of Collins's 24 point federal dollars edge. Keep each instrument labeled.
How Maine fits the plus four math
Sunday's InsiderAdvantage package showed Democratic leads of two points in Alaska and Michigan and one point in Kansas, each from 1,200 likely voter samples (InsiderAdvantage, October 11, 2026). Stack those next to Maine's Post-Schar and Rasmussen prints and the map that requires Democrats to convert several Trump 2024 states. Trump carried Alaska by about 13 points in 2024 while Maine's Second District has long been the state's Republican lean and its First District the Democratic lean (RealClearPolling Alaska notes; Cook Senate materials).
Settled for this analysis: Jackson leads inside the margin in the newest high quality public polls; Sanders completed a three city tour; Cook rates Maine Toss Up; Democrats still need net plus four nationally (Washington Post, October 9, 2026; Rasmussen Reports; Cook Political Report, October 6, 2026). Still open: whether Collins's federal dollars advantage and past overperformance close the gap, whether Sanders energy lifts turnout in Lewiston and Biddeford without alienating swing independents, and whether early vote returns track the 50 to 46 or 49 to 47 prints. A state that can host a progressive tour, keep a 30 year incumbent inside four points, and still publish competing polls in public is running a competitive American Senate race. Cite every instrument. Wait for November 3.
AAA's Monday national diesel average of $6.2665, against $3.6653 a year ago, is the affordability backdrop Maine voters already named in the Post-Schar cost of living rows (AAA Fuel Prices, October 12, 2026; Washington Post, October 9, 2026). Heating oil and gasoline unaffordability figures above 60 percent in that survey sit next to a senator who chairs Appropriations and a challenger who is running on Medicare for All with Sanders beside him (USA Today summarizing Jackson platform, October 9, 2026). That contrast is the race. It is also why Maine belongs on the same national clipboard as Alaska, Michigan, and Kansas this week. Four points in Maine and two points in Alaska are different geographies under the same plus four requirement. Cite both. Do not average them into a slogan.
