Governor board lands the morning after the Senate board

On October 4 the New York Times and Siena University released gubernatorial polls of likely voters in the same five state package that reshaped the Senate conversation a day earlier. Democrat Rob Sand leads Republican Zach Lahn 52 to 41 in Iowa. Democrat Gina Hinojosa leads Republican Gov. Greg Abbott 49 to 46 in Texas. Democrat Amy Acton leads Republican Vivek Ramaswamy 49 to 45 in Ohio. Republican Ty Masterson leads Democrat Cindy Holscher 49 to 44 in Kansas. In Alaska, Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins leads a fragmented Republican field at 40 percent first preference, and Times Siena's ranked choice simulation finishes him at 52 to 48 over Bernadette Wilson (Siena Research Institute, October 4, 2026; New York Times, October 4, 2026).

Read those rows next to our board on governor races 2026. A governor race is not a Senate race. A three point Texas lead against a long serving incumbent is not a finished Capitol. It is a published instrument thirty days from the canvass. The Times framed Democrats as within reach of flipping four Republican held governorships on the strength of these surveys, while noting Kansas as the surveyed state where the Republican still leads (New York Times, October 4, 2026).

Iowa's eleven point gap and the open chair Kim Reynolds leaves

Iowa produced the clearest Democratic gubernatorial margin in the package. Sand, the state auditor and the only Democrat holding statewide office there, sits eleven points ahead of Lahn to succeed Gov. Kim Reynolds, who is retiring after nine years (New York Times, October 4, 2026; Siena, October 4, 2026). An eleven point lead among likely voters is a real signal. It is also still a poll, not a certified count.

Stack Iowa's governor row with Iowa's Senate row from the day before. Hinson led Turek 48 to 47 for Senate while Sand leads Lahn 52 to 41 for governor (Siena Senate, October 3, 2026; Siena Governor, October 4, 2026). Same state. Same fieldwork window. Different offices. Different margins. That split is the kind of receipt a ranking site exists to keep visible without mashing both races into one mood.

Texas and Ohio: incumbents and appointments under water in the sample

Abbott trailing Hinojosa 46 to 49 among likely voters is the surprise that will travel farthest. Abbott has been a Republican fixture in Texas for decades. The Times framed Democrats as within reach of flipping four Republican held governorships on the strength of these surveys (New York Times, October 4, 2026). Ohio's Acton at 49 against Ramaswamy at 45 continues a competitive open race in a state that has tilted right in recent presidential years.

Neither lead clears a large error band on its own. Both sit inside the same midterm pressure that produced Democratic Senate leads or ties in the identical states a day earlier. Put the governor numbers next to how to read governor rankings and presidents by economic record. Kitchen table economics travel down ballot. They do not automatically elect a governor.

Kansas stays Republican on the governor line while the Senate sits even

Kansas is the surveyed state where the Republican leads for governor. Masterson, the state senate president, leads Holscher 49 to 44 as outgoing Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly leaves office after two tight wins in a conservative leaning state (New York Times, October 4, 2026). The Times noted Masterson draws some crossover support from voters who also plan to back Democrat Adam Hamilton in the Senate race.

That split matters. Times Siena had Hamilton and Marshall even at 45 in the Senate poll released October 3 (Siena, October 3, 2026). A state can print a tied Senate race and a five point Republican governor lead in the same week. Republicans currently hold 26 of 50 governorships, so this year's elections could tip the balance of state executive power (New York Times, October 4, 2026). Score both lines. Do not collapse them.

What a thirty day governor board settles

Settled from Sunday's release: Sand plus 11 in Iowa, Hinojosa plus 3 in Texas, Acton plus 4 in Ohio, Masterson plus 5 in Kansas, and Kreiss-Tomkins first in Alaska with a ranked choice finish of 52 to 48 in the Times Siena simulation (Siena, October 4, 2026). Settled from the surrounding week: the same five states are also printing Democratic Senate leads or ties, and national Republican Senate money is already pivoting into Kansas defense (New York Times, October 3 to 4, 2026; NBC News, October 2, 2026).

Still open: whether Abbott closes, whether Iowa's governor margin compresses as Republican turnout machines engage, and whether Alaska's ranked choice rounds hold when real ballots replace a survey simulation. Cook's Senate board still needs Democrats to net four seats while Republicans defend a 53 seat majority (Cook, September 23, 2026; The Guardian, October 2, 2026). Governor chairs move on a parallel track that can tip the 26 to 24 Republican edge in statehouses (New York Times, October 4, 2026).

America can put four Democratic governor leads on a Times Siena clipboard in Trump won states and still ask free citizens to finish the work on November 3. That is hopeful civic machinery. Print the numbers. Wait for the canvass. Score the release the same way we score every ranking on this site: both parties, same ruler, receipts first.
