Sununu and Pappas Win New Hampshire Primaries. The Senate General Is Set.

The nominees are named

New Hampshire finished its state primary on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, and named the two candidates who will fight for the open U.S. Senate seat Sen. Jeanne Shaheen is leaving (Associated Press, September 8, 2026; NBC News, September 8, 2026; CNN, September 8, 2026). Former Sen. John E. Sununu won the Republican nomination. Rep. Chris Pappas won the Democratic nomination. Fifty five days remain until Election Day on November 3.

With an estimated 84 percent of the Republican primary counted, Sununu held 68.5 percent to Scott Brown's 26.7 percent (USA TODAY summarizing Associated Press and CNN returns, September 9, 2026). With about 88 percent of the Democratic primary counted, Pappas held 65 percent to Karishma Manzur's 32.8 percent (USA TODAY, September 9, 2026). Earlier evening snapshots from New Hampshire Public Radio showed the same order of finish while the canvass was still thin: Sununu near 70 and Brown near 25, Pappas near 62 and Manzur near 27 (NHPR, September 8, 2026). The Associated Press called both Senate races shortly after polls closed.

What the margins settle, and what they do not

The primary margins settle the nominee question. They do not settle the November chair. Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales moved the general election from Tilt Democrat to Toss Up on September 3 (Washington Examiner, September 4, 2026). Cook Political Report and Sabato's Crystal Ball still print Lean Democrat / Leans Democratic for the open Democratic seat (Cook Political Report; Sabato's Crystal Ball; Washington Examiner, September 4, 2026). RealClearPolitics lists a Tossup. Print every named sheet. Do not invent a single consensus the raters refuse to share.

University of New Hampshire Survey Center fieldwork from late August had Sununu edging Pappas 45 to 43 in a general trial heat, while Saint Anselm College still had Pappas ahead 48 to 41 a week earlier (270toWin tables; Washington Examiner, September 4, 2026). RealClearPolling's average spanning March 21 to August 24 put Pappas at 45.3 percent and Sununu at 43.3 percent, a 2.0 point Democratic edge (RealClearPolling New Hampshire Senate page, 2026). Close surveys in a small state are why one major handicapper already prints Toss Up. Close surveys are still surveys.

Money already aimed past primary night

Public FEC roundups through mid August put Pappas near $15.4 million raised and about $4.3 million cash on hand as of August 19, against Manzur near $415,000 raised (Associated Press, September 7, 2026; CNN citing AdImpact outside spending near $4.8 million aiding Pappas in the primary, September 8, 2026). On the Republican side, Sununu had raised about $4.1 million with roughly $3.0 million remaining, while Brown had raised about $2.2 million (Associated Press, September 7, 2026).

Americans for Prosperity Action has spent at least $3.3 million since June 30 supporting Sununu and opposing Pappas (Associated Press, September 7, 2026). Why one open New England seat sits on the national board

Republicans hold the Senate 53 to 47. Democrats need a net gain of four seats for majority control in 2027 because Vice President JD Vance would break a 50 to 50 tie (Associated Press, September 8, 2026; US Political Rank Senate races board). New Hampshire is a Democratic held open seat in a state Kamala Harris carried by about 2.8 points in 2024 (Washington Examiner, September 4, 2026). Republicans have not won a U.S. Senate race in New Hampshire since 2010 (Associated Press, September 8, 2026; NBC News, September 8, 2026).

Associated Press reporting into Labor Day week framed Senate control as wide open less than two months from Election Day, with expected midterm spending across all races above $3.4 billion (Associated Press, September 8, 2026). Senate Majority Leader John Thune has called the environment competitive and said he worries about losing the chamber (Washington Post, September 2, 2026; Associated Press, September 8, 2026). Those are named leaders describing named risk. They are not finished seat counts.

The House echo from the same night

The same primary night also locked New Hampshire's open 1st Congressional District, the House seat Pappas is leaving to run statewide. Stefany Shaheen, daughter of the retiring senator, narrowly won the Democratic House primary over Maura Sullivan, about 37.2 percent to 35 percent with roughly 91 percent counted, while progressive Carleigh Beriont took about 22 percent (USA TODAY, September 9, 2026; NH Journal, September 9, 2026; Associated Press call at 12:35 a.m. Wednesday). Republican Anthony DiLorenzo, endorsed by President Donald Trump, won his primary with about 51.6 percent (USA TODAY, September 9, 2026; NHPR, September 9, 2026).
