RCP Aggregate: Republicans Trail in Eight of Nine Senate Battlegrounds
A RealClearPolitics polling stack published August 30 shows GOP candidates behind in Alaska, Georgia, Maine, Michigan, Ohio, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Texas. Iowa is the lone bright spot at plus 1.4. Cook still lists six Senate Toss Ups. Election Day is 64 days away.
RCP Senate battleground margins for Republicans, August 30 stack
Eight deficits, one lead, sixty four days
On August 30, 2026, the New York Post reported a RealClearPolitics aggregate of major battleground Senate races that put Republican candidates behind in eight of nine contests it reviewed (New York Post, August 30, 2026). The published spreads were Alaska minus 2, Georgia minus 7.5, Maine minus 2.3, Michigan minus 1.8, Ohio minus 2.6, New Hampshire minus 2, North Carolina minus 8, and Texas minus 1.9. Iowa alone showed a Republican lead: Rep. Ashley Hinson ahead of Josh Turek by 1.4 points in the same stack (New York Post, August 30, 2026).
Those figures are averages of published polls, not certified results. Most of the deficits sit inside a typical poll margin of error. Georgia and North Carolina are the clear outliers on the Democratic side of the stack. Iowa is the clear outlier on the Republican side. Treat the table as a late August thermometer, not a November forecast.
Where the deficits sit against Cook's board
Cook Political Report's Senate ratings, last summarized publicly around August 20 and still carrying six Toss Ups on the site's ratings page into late August, put the national board at Solid Democrat 9, Likely Democrat 1, Lean Democrat 3, Toss Up 6, Lean Republican 0, Likely Republican 2, and Solid Republican 14 among seats up this cycle (Cook Political Report, August 20, 2026; Cook ratings hub, August 2026). The Toss Up column includes five Republican held seats and one Democratic held seat on that summary. Democrats need a net gain of four for a majority because Vice President JD Vance would break a 50 to 50 tie (Cook Political Report, 2026).
US Political Rank tracks flip likelihood and rating movement on its ranking of 2026 Senate races. A polling average that shows the president's party trailing in eight battlegrounds is soft data. A Cook Toss Up is soft data of a different kind: a published judgment that either party has a real chance. Soft data still belongs on the table. It does not replace the canvass.
Read the map honestly both ways. Republicans hold more of the seats in the RCP battleground stack. Democrats hold three of the battlegrounds in that same report. A midterm environment that tilts against the president's party is a recurring American pattern. So is an incumbent party that still has paths on specific state maps. Both statements can be true on the same Monday.
State by state receipts, not a single mood
Michigan's open Democratic seat has been close in August. An EPIC-MRA survey fielded August 22 to 28 put Abdul El-Sayed at 47 percent and Mike Rogers at 43 percent among likely voters (Politically.com poll compilation citing EPIC-MRA, August 2026). A 270toWin average of five recent polls had El-Sayed at about 46.6 percent and Rogers at about 44.4 percent (270toWin Michigan Senate page, August 29, 2026). That is a Democratic held seat inside the RCP trailing stack for Republicans. It is not a finished race.
Iowa's open Republican seat is the exception in the Post's read of the RCP stack. Suffolk University fielded August 20 to 23 and found Hinson at 45.4 percent and Turek at 40.8 percent (Politically.com citing Suffolk, August 2026). Cook moved Iowa into Toss Up on August 20 along with Texas (Cook Political Report, August 20, 2026). A 1.4 point Republican edge in an aggregate and a Toss Up rating can sit next to each other without contradiction. One is a poll stack. The other is a handicapper's uncertainty label.
North Carolina remains the clearest rated flip on the major boards, with former Gov. Roy Cooper leading former RNC chair Michael Whatley in multiple surveys and Cook rating the open seat Lean Democrat (Cook Political Report, 2026). Georgia's Democratic held seat shows the widest deficit for Republicans in the August 30 aggregate at minus 7.5 (New York Post, August 30, 2026). Alaska, Maine, Ohio, New Hampshire, and Texas sit closer to even in that same report. Close is not decided.
Generic ballot and the House board on the same desk
The RealClearPolitics generic congressional ballot average covering July 22 through August 28 put Democrats at 48.2 percent and Republicans at 41.8 percent, a Democratic lead of 6.4 points (RealClearPolling, August 28, 2026). Quantus Insights fielded August 26 to 28 at Democrats 50, Republicans 43 (RealClearPolling, August 28, 2026). Those national figures help explain why House handicappers still show a large Toss Up pile. Cook's House board after the August 25 moves carried 21 Toss Ups (Cook Political Report / 270toWin compilation, August 25, 2026).
Keep the instruments separate. A generic ballot is not a Senate race. A Senate aggregate is not a House district. A Cook rating is not a poll. A poll is not a certified count. US Political Rank keeps the House map on its ranking of most competitive House districts of 2026. The American habit worth defending is the habit of reading each instrument for what it measures, then waiting for November 3.
Election Day is 64 days from August 31. The RCP stack from August 30 is a real receipt about late summer preference. It does not finish Alaska, Maine, Michigan, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Texas, or Iowa. It does not erase Cook's six Toss Ups. It does not invent a wave. It shows eight trails and one lead on a published average. That is enough to print. It is not enough to call the chamber.
