Primary Eve in Massachusetts: Healey at 50 Percent Approval, Minogue Leads GOP Field
UNH's late August Bay State Poll puts Gov. Maura Healey at 50 percent approve and 48 percent disapprove, with double digit leads over both Republican hopefuls. Mike Minogue leads Brian Shortsleeve 55 to 11 among likely Republican primary voters. Tuesday names the nominees. November still decides the offices.

One night decides nominations, not the general
Massachusetts votes Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Polls open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Statewide, Democrats will choose a U.S. Senate nominee between Sen. Ed Markey and Rep. Seth Moulton. Republicans will choose a gubernatorial nominee between Mike Minogue and Brian Shortsleeve. Most other statewide Democratic incumbents face no primary opposition (Tufts Daily primary guide, August 25, 2026; State House News Service advances, August 28, 2026).
Primary Day finishes party lines. It does not finish November. Keep those clocks separate. From August 31 to September 1 is one day. From August 31 to November 3 is sixty four days. Both clocks are real.
Healey's overall grade and the issue grades underneath
The University of New Hampshire Survey Center released a Bay State Poll on August 27 that found 50 percent of Massachusetts residents approve of Gov. Maura Healey's overall job performance and 48 percent disapprove, with about 3 percent unsure (UNH Survey Center, August 27, 2026; Boston Herald, August 30, 2026). Net approval sits at plus 2, up five points from a June reading of minus 3 on the same series (Boston Herald summarizing UNH, August 30, 2026).
Read the full table. The same release said majorities disapprove of her handling of housing and the cost of living, the two problems residents named most often (UNH Survey Center abstract, August 27, 2026). Democrats approve at about 75 percent. Independents approve at about 43 percent. Republicans approve at about 10 percent (Boston Herald, August 30, 2026). An overall grade near even and issue grades underwater can sit on the same page. Cherry picking only the issue rows invents a different governor than the overall row shows. Cherry picking only the overall row invents a different voter than the housing row shows. Print both.
Earlier MassINC and Emerson readings this spring had put Healey's favorability lower, including a May MassINC figure with 39 percent favorable (Boston Herald, May 18, 2026). Instruments move. The August UNH reading is the latest published statewide job grade before the primary. It is not a forecast of November turnout.
The Republican primary and the November tests
Among likely Republican primary voters in the same UNH package, Minogue led Shortsleeve 55 percent to 11 percent, with a large undecided share near 34 percent on a sample of about 201 likely Republican primary voters (270toWin compilation of UNH, August 27, 2026). Small primary samples carry wide margins of error. The direction is still clear enough to print: Minogue is the published frontrunner on the last major public instrument before Tuesday.
UNH also tested November. Against Minogue, Healey led 54 percent to 30 percent. Against Shortsleeve, Healey led 55 percent to 28 percent, each with mid teens other or undecided (270toWin Massachusetts governor page citing UNH, August 27, 2026). Those are general election preferences in late August. They are not Tuesday's Republican primary. They are not a certified November count.
US Political Rank tracks gubernatorial competitiveness on its ranking of 2026 governor races. Massachusetts remains a Democratic held state on the major boards. An overall approval near 50 percent and a double digit lead in trial heats are measurements. They are not substitutes for the Republican nomination Tuesday or the general election in November.
State House News Service noted that for most Beacon Hill incumbents the primary is largely a non event, with each major party carrying one true statewide primary fight: Democrats on the Senate line, Republicans on the governor line (State House News Service, August 28, 2026). That concentration of attention is itself a receipt. The rest of the ballot still matters to the people who live in those districts. It does not rewrite the statewide instruments above.
What Tuesday settles, and what it leaves open
Tuesday settles the Democratic Senate nominee and the Republican gubernatorial nominee. It settles other contested legislative primaries on the same ballot, including races where Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has backed challengers (WCVB On the Record, August 30, 2026; Boston Herald, August 29, 2026). It does not settle Markey or Moulton against Republican John Deaton. It does not settle Healey against Minogue or Shortsleeve. It does not rewrite Cook's national Senate Toss Up count of six (Cook Political Report, August 20, 2026).
Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin reported early voting already in the hundreds of thousands late last week, with turnout near 9 percent of the potential primary electorate before the early vote window closed (State House News Service, August 27, 2026). Early ballots are receipts. Precinct night finishes the canvass.
A republic that publishes a 50 to 48 job grade, a 55 to 11 primary lead, and still waits for Tuesday is doing ordinary work. Optimistic and honest both fit. Massachusetts will name nominees. America will still wait until November 3 to name officeholders. Keep the ruler the same for every party on the ballot.
