Markey Leads Moulton by Double Digits Two Days Before Massachusetts Primary

A three poll stack, not a finished ballot

Sunday, August 30, 2026, leaves two days until Massachusetts Democrats choose a U.S. Senate nominee. The published late polls point the same direction. A University of New Hampshire Survey Center Bay State Poll fielded August 20 to 24 put Sen. Ed Markey at 63 percent and Rep. Seth Moulton at 28 percent among likely Democratic primary voters, with about 7 percent undecided (UNH Survey Center, August 26, 2026; Telegram USA TODAY Network, August 27, 2026). That is a 35 point lead.

A Suffolk University / Boston Globe survey of 500 likely primary voters, released August 18, had Markey at about 52 percent and Moulton at about 38 percent, a lead of roughly 14 points with about 9 percent still undecided (Boston Globe, August 18, 2026). A UMass Amherst / WCVB YouGov survey of 445 likely Democratic primary voters, released August 17, had Markey at 60 percent and Moulton at 32 percent (Axios Boston, August 17, 2026; Boston Herald, August 17, 2026). Three instruments. One direction. None of them is the certified count.

What the same polls say about the general election

UNH also tested November matchups. Against Republican John Deaton, Markey led 49 percent to 30 percent. In a separate hypothetical with Moulton as the Democratic nominee, Moulton led Deaton 38 percent to 25 percent, with a much larger undecided and third party share (UNH Survey Center, August 26, 2026; 270toWin compilation, August 26, 2026). UMass Amherst had Markey at 51 percent to Deaton's 30 percent, and Moulton at 49 percent to Deaton's 25 percent (Axios Boston, August 17, 2026).

Those figures settle a published preference order in late August samples. They do not settle turnout on September 1. They do not settle independent crossover in November. Massachusetts remains a state that has not elected a Republican senator since 1972. A Solid Democratic Senate rating from the major handicappers is a measurement of that map, not a substitute for a canvass.

Keep the primary and the general on separate lines. A 63 to 28 primary lead inside one party is not a 49 to 30 general election lead against the other party. UNH published both on the same release. Treating them as one number invents a consensus the crosstabs do not show (UNH Survey Center, August 26, 2026).

Age, favorability, and early ballots already cast

Moulton has centered the race on generational change. Markey turns 80 this year. UNH found Markey's net favorability among Democratic primary voters at plus 43, while Moulton's sat at minus 10 (Telegram summarizing UNH, August 27, 2026). Suffolk and UMass both showed Markey leading across liberals and most age groups, including younger voters in the UMass sample (Axios Boston, August 17, 2026; Boston Globe, August 18, 2026).

Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin told reporters that a lopsided Senate primary alone would not drive unusually high statewide turnout. As of late August, roughly 245,000 Democratic ballots and about 45,000 Republican ballots had already been cast early, with nearly 700,000 mail ballot requests and a return rate near 50 percent (Hoodline citing Boston Globe figures, August 23, 2026). Early ballots are receipts. They are not the full precinct night.

Markey and Moulton also met in televised debates, including a late August WCVB partnership with WBUR and The Boston Globe (Boston Herald noting the scheduled debate window, August 17, 2026). Debate nights move persuasion at the margin. They do not replace the canvass. From August 30 to September 1 is two days. From August 30 to November 3 is sixty five days. Both clocks are real.

Where this race sits on the national Senate board

Cook Political Report's Senate board still carries six Toss Ups after Texas and Iowa moved on August 20. Democrats need a net gain of four for a majority because Vice President JD Vance would break a 50 to 50 tie (Cook Political Report, August 20, 2026). Massachusetts is not on that Toss Up list. It is a Democratic held seat in a deep blue state. The primary decides who carries the party line. It does not rewrite the national path through Alaska, Maine, Michigan, Ohio, Georgia, or North Carolina.

That coverage is context. It is not a substitute for Tuesday's count. A republic that publishes three late polls and still waits for the ballot is doing ordinary work.
