Michigan Is the One Democratic Toss Up. The Crosstabs Are the Story.
Cook's Senate board still carries six Toss Ups. Five are Republican held. One is Michigan. EPIC-MRA just put Abdul El-Sayed four points ahead of Mike Rogers. A four point lead inside a four point error band is not a finished seat. It is a brick.
EPIC-MRA Michigan Senate topline, August 22 to 28
Start with the chamber arithmetic, then open Michigan
I keep a printed copy of Cook Political Report's Senate ratings on the desk. The August 20 summary has not moved in the public summary I can verify this morning: Solid Democrat 9, Likely Democrat 1, Lean Democrat 3, Toss Up 6, Lean Republican 0, Likely Republican 2, Solid Republican 14 (Cook Political Report Senate ratings, August 20, 2026). Six Toss Ups. One of them is Democratic held. That seat is Michigan.
Republicans sit at 53 seats. Democrats need a net gain of four for a majority in 2027 because Vice President JD Vance breaks a tie (Cook Political Report, 2026; Forbes, August 31, 2026). Lose Michigan and the four seat path gets longer by one. Hold Michigan and every other pickup still has to be earned on its own map. That is not rhetoric. That is seat math.
US Political Rank converts those labels into a flip likelihood ranking of 2026 Senate races. I use that page the way a reporter uses a city directory. It does not replace Cook. It does not replace a poll. It keeps the competitive cells in one place so a Tuesday morning column does not invent a seventh Toss Up out of thin air.
The EPIC-MRA brick from August 22 to 28
EPIC-MRA of Lansing surveyed 600 likely Michigan voters between August 22 and August 28. The Free Press and Forbes published the topline on August 31. Abdul El-Sayed 47 percent. Mike Rogers 43 percent. Undecided or refusing 10 percent. Margin of error plus or minus 4 points (Detroit Free Press, August 31, 2026; Forbes, August 31, 2026).
Read that slowly. The lead equals the error band. Ten percent of the sample has not chosen. That is a real lead. It is also a soft lead. I will not upgrade it into a forecast and I will not talk myself into ignoring it.
The same questionnaire put Jocelyn Benson at 45 and John James at 41 for governor, with 14 percent undecided (Detroit Free Press, August 31, 2026). Pollster Bernie Porn told the Free Press he was surprised the Senate margin looked wider than the governor margin on one sample. Surprise is allowed. Substitution is not. A Senate cell is not a governor cell. US Political Rank keeps the executive races on 2026 governor races for exactly that reason.
Age, gender, race, and a 62 percent health care number
The Free Press printed the internals that matter. El-Sayed led 18 to 34 year olds 62 to 31. He led 35 to 49 year olds 48 to 38. Independents tied at 36 to 36 with 29 percent undecided. White voters preferred Rogers 49 to 43. Black voters preferred El-Sayed 77 to 9. Men preferred Rogers 52 to 41. Women preferred El-Sayed 53 to 34 (Detroit Free Press, August 31, 2026).
Sixty two percent of the sample favored a Medicare for All style single payer plan. More than two thirds of that group backed El-Sayed (Detroit Free Press, August 31, 2026). That is not a mandate. It is a measured preference on one survey in one state. It does explain how a progressive nominee who won a hard primary can post a narrow general election edge without inventing a national ideology story.
Other bricks on the same wall disagree. Susquehanna earlier in August had El-Sayed up seven. AARP around August 20 had him up one. Fox News in mid August had Rogers ahead. 270toWin's five poll average near August 29 sat near El-Sayed 46.6 and Rogers 44.4 (Forbes, August 31, 2026; 270toWin Michigan Senate page, August 29, 2026). A serious desk prints the stack. A careless desk picks the friendliest brick and calls it the wall.
Five Republican Toss Ups still sit beside this one
Cook's other Toss Ups remain Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, and Texas on the Republican held side of the board (Cook Political Report Senate ratings, August 20, 2026). North Carolina sits in the Lean Democrat column as a Republican held seat that handicappers already treat as the clearest rated flip. Georgia and New Hampshire sit with the other Lean Democrat cells. I will not mash Lean and Toss Up into one adjective. Lean means one party has an edge. Toss Up means either party has a real chance. Those are different published claims.
Yesterday's RealClearPolitics battleground stack, as written up August 30, still showed Republicans trailing in eight of nine reviewed Senate battlegrounds, with Iowa the lone Republican lead at plus 1.4 (New York Post, August 30, 2026). Michigan appeared in that stack as a Republican deficit of about 1.8 points. EPIC-MRA's 47 to 43 is a different instrument from that aggregate. Both can be true on consecutive mornings. Neither is November 3.
What a republic does with unfinished numbers
This morning Massachusetts is voting in a Solid Democrat Senate primary while Michigan's Toss Up seat sits 63 days from a general election (CBS News Boston, September 1, 2026; Cook Political Report, August 20, 2026). Emerson College just printed Ed Markey at 60 and Seth Moulton at 33 among likely Democratic primary voters (Newsweek citing Emerson, August 31, 2026). That is a finished looking primary poll in a seat Cook does not treat as competitive in November. Michigan is the opposite problem: a competitive November seat with an unfinished preference stack.
I will say the pro American fact without picking a party. The country still publishes nonpartisan race ratings with dates on them. It still lets a Lansing firm release crosstabs that cut against both campaigns' preferred stories. It still runs a primary in one state on the same calendar square that another state uses to argue about a four point poll. That is not decline. That is a large republic doing its ordinary work in public.
Watch Michigan's next two or three surveys the way you watch a second source on a contested ledger line. Watch whether the undecided share shrinks. Watch whether the independent tie breaks. Watch whether Cook keeps the Toss Up label or moves the seat. Do not watch a single EPIC-MRA topline and declare the chamber. Four points inside four points of error, with ten percent uncommitted, on the only Democratic Toss Up on the board, is enough for a Tuesday column. It is not enough for a gavel.
