Texas Senate Is a Toss Up on Two Boards. Super PAC Money Just Arrived.

Three raters, two answers, one Saturday filing

Texas is no longer a Likely Republican line that can be waved away with a shrug. Cook Political Report moved the open U.S. Senate seat from Lean Republican to Toss Up on August 20, 2026 (Cook Political Report via CNN and Mediaite, August 20, 2026). Sabato's Crystal Ball moved it to Toss Up on August 26 (texpolls.com citing Sabato, September 6, 2026). Inside Elections still rates the same contest Lean Republican (texpolls.com, September 6, 2026).

On Saturday, September 5, MAGA Inc. filed a $10 million independent expenditure for television and digital ads split $5 million for Ken Paxton and $5 million against James Talarico (The New York Times, September 5, 2026; The Wall Street Journal, September 5, 2026; Associated Press, September 5, 2026). That is the first major general election spend from a super PAC that held about $403.5 million as of July 31 (CNBC, September 4, 2026). Ratings and money are different instruments. Stack them. Cite them. Do not mash them into a prophecy.

How Texas got onto the national board

Paxton, the Republican attorney general, defeated four term Sen. John Cornyn 63.8 percent to 36.2 percent in the May 26 runoff after President Trump endorsed him (Ballotpedia, 2026; Cook Political Report, May 26, 2026). Talarico, a Democratic state representative, won his March primary outright near 52.5 percent over Rep. Jasmine Crockett (Ballotpedia, 2026; texpolls.com, September 6, 2026).

Cook's Jessica Taylor told CNN the August Toss Up move happened because Paxton was a weak fundraiser and not the nominee Republicans wanted, and that the race would not have moved the same way with Cornyn still on the ballot (Mediaite quoting Taylor, August 20, 2026). That is a named editor describing a named rating change. It is not a USPR score. Our board of 2026 Senate races still has to track every published shift the same way for both parties.

What the recent polls actually print

RealClearPolitics' average spanning July 23 to August 26 put Talarico at 47.3 percent and Paxton at 44.9 percent, a 2.4 point Democratic edge (RealClearPolling, 2026 Texas Senate). Individual rows inside that window disagree in the honest way surveys do. Emerson's August 9 to 10 likely voter survey had Paxton ahead 47 to 46. University of Texas fieldwork from August 5 to 13 had Talarico ahead 42 to 39. Texas A&M/Siena in late July had Talarico ahead 47 to 43. Fox News in late July had Talarico ahead 51 to 48 among registered voters (RealClearPolling table, 2026).

An earlier New York Times/Siena survey from June 19 to 27 had the candidates tied at 47 percent each in a state Trump carried by nearly 14 points in 2024 (The New York Times, June 30, 2026; USA Today, June 30, 2026). A June University of Texas Politics Project poll had Paxton ahead 43 to 42 (Texas Tribune via ABC13, June 24, 2026). Close surveys in a large state are not a finished election. They are why Cook and Sabato abandoned Lean Republican.

The fundraising gap the Saturday buy answers

Through the end of June, Axios put Talarico's haul near $68 million against about $9 million for Paxton (Axios, September 5, 2026). The Texas Tribune's midsummer cumulative reading put Talarico near $72.0 million raised and Paxton near $16.8 million, with Talarico ending June near $23.3 million cash on hand (Texas Tribune, July 20, 2026). Austin American Statesman coverage of the June 30 filings put Talarico near $21.5 million cash on hand after raising more than $30 million in the prior quarter, against Paxton near $1.7 million cash on hand after raising about $9 million in the same window (Austin American Statesman, July 17, 2026).

America PAC's August disclosure put about $247,595 into Texas Senate printing, the largest Senate line among seven states in a roughly $800,000 first wave (CNBC, September 3, 2026; CBS News, September 3, 2026). Axios later described about $2.4 million in America PAC spending bolstering Paxton as of September 2 (Axios, September 5, 2026). MAGA Inc.'s $10 million filing is an order of magnitude larger than that August Texas line. It is still a fraction of the $400 million to $500 million President Trump said Friday he would allocate for midterms (CNBC, September 4, 2026).

What fifty eight days leave unsettled

Democrats need a net gain of four Senate seats for majority control in 2027 because Republicans hold 53 seats and Vice President JD Vance would break a 50 to 50 tie (US Political Rank Senate races board). Texas is a Republican held open seat in a state that has not elected a Democrat statewide in more than three decades (Axios, September 5, 2026). A Toss Up rating from Cook and Sabato raises the seat's flip salience without erasing Inside Elections' Lean Republican line.

Charlie Cook's early September midterm column still framed Republican Senate losses in bands of four to six seats depending on the scenario (Charlie Cook Politics, September 3, 2026). Texas is one instrument on that board beside North Carolina, Maine, Ohio, Michigan, Alaska, Iowa, New Hampshire, and Georgia. New Hampshire votes first on Tuesday, September 8. Texas votes with the country on November 3.

The honest American frame is simple. Two major handicappers rate Texas Toss Up. One still says Lean Republican. A recent polling average shows a 2.4 point Talarico edge that sits near ordinary survey noise. Candidate cash favored the Democrat by tens of millions through June. A presidentially allied super PAC just filed $10 million to close that gap. Celebrate a republic that can publish ratings, poll crosstabs, and independent expenditures in public. Then wait for the certified November count that fills the seat. Fifty eight days. Same ruler for both parties.
