New Hampshire Senate Primary Is Five Days Out. The General Already Looks Close.

Massachusetts finished its Democratic Senate primary on September 1. New Hampshire votes on September 8, five days from Thursday, September 3, 2026. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen is retiring. The open seat is one of Cook Political Report's Lean Democrat contests among seats up this cycle, alongside Georgia and North Carolina on the August 20 sheet (Cook Political Report Senate ratings, August 20, 2026; Ballotpedia New Hampshire Senate 2026 pages).

The Democratic primary field includes Rep. Chris Pappas and progressive challenger Karishma Manzur, plus David Jarvis, Maxwell Saal, and John Vail (Ballotpedia, September 2026). The Republican primary field includes former Sen. John E. Sununu, former Sen. Scott Brown, and Tejasinha Sivalingam (Ballotpedia, September 2026). Primaries name nominees. They do not certify November.

What the late August instruments say

University of New Hampshire Survey Center fieldwork from August 20 to 24 put Pappas at 47 percent and Manzur at 34 percent among likely Democratic primary voters, with about 18 to 19 percent undecided depending on the writeup (UNH Survey Center via Newsweek and Seacoastonline, August 26, 2026). On the Republican side, Sununu led Brown 60 percent to 20 percent with about 17 to 20 percent undecided (UNH Survey Center, August 26, 2026). Saint Anselm College fieldwork from August 17 to 18 had Pappas at 59 percent and Manzur at 28 percent in the Democratic primary, and Sununu at 54 percent and Brown at 24 percent in the Republican primary (270toWin New Hampshire Senate polls page; Ballotpedia).

General election trial heats disagree within ordinary error. UNH put Sununu at 45 percent and Pappas at 43 percent among 1,878 likely voters, margin of error about plus or minus 2.3 points (UNH Survey Center, August 26, 2026; 270toWin). Saint Anselm put Pappas at 48 percent and Sununu at 41 percent among 1,411 likely voters (270toWin; Ballotpedia). Against Brown, Pappas led 45 to 40 in the UNH heat and 49 to 37 in the Saint Anselm heat (270toWin). Print both instruments. Do not flatten them into one mood.

A party poll calls a dead heat

The New Hampshire Union Leader reported on September 2 that the National Republican Senatorial Committee shared an exclusive Fabrizio, Lee and Associates survey of 600 likely general election voters fielded August 27 to 30. The Union Leader described the Sununu versus Pappas result as a dead heat (New Hampshire Union Leader, September 2, 2026). Exact candidate percentages were not reproduced in the free public summary available for this report. A prior Peak Insights poll for the NRSC in late June had Pappas at 43 percent and Sununu at 42 percent (NRSC press release, July 10, 2026; POLITICO coverage cited by NRSC).

Party polls are advocacy instruments. University polls are research instruments. Both belong in the file when labeled. Cook still rates New Hampshire Lean Democrat, not Toss Up (Cook Political Report, August 20, 2026). Decision Desk HQ and The Hill list Likely Democratic. Inside Elections lists Tilt Democratic. Sabato's Crystal Ball lists Lean Democratic (Ballotpedia race ratings table, September 2026). A Lean Democrat seat can still host a close autumn. That is why the seat sits on US Political Rank's ranking of 2026 Senate races.

How New Hampshire fits the national board

Republicans hold a 53 to 47 Senate majority. Democrats need a net plus four for control in 2027 because Vice President JD Vance would break a 50 to 50 tie. Cook's competitive core remains about nine seats, with six Toss Ups on the August 20 sheet: Michigan plus Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, and Texas (Cook Political Report, September 1, 2026). New Hampshire is not on that Toss Up list. It is on the Lean Democrat list with Georgia's Jon Ossoff and North Carolina's open seat.

America PAC's August independent expenditure disclosure put $91,458.50 into New Hampshire Senate printing, fourth among seven Senate targets behind Texas, Maine, and Ohio (CBS News, September 3, 2026). That is a documented first wave, not a finished turnout program. The New Hampshire AFL-CIO endorsed Pappas ahead of the primary (New Hampshire Union Leader, September 1, 2026).

Five days remain until the primary canvass. Sixty one days remain until Election Day. The honest American read is that an open Democratic held seat in a Lean Democrat state is competitive enough to deserve attention, that late instruments disagree by a few points inside error bands, and that only September 8 names the nominees.
