One Day Before the Gym Opens. Print Every Rating. Then Wait.

New Hampshire votes Tuesday for Jeanne Shaheen's open Senate seat. The Financial Times just printed Trump approval at 33 percent. I score the receipts on one clipboard. Fifty seven days to November.

I trust a school gym more than a cable chyron

I build puzzles for a living. A good puzzle does not let you invent a square. Tomorrow New Hampshire opens school gyms and town halls for a state primary that will name the nominees for Jeanne Shaheen's open U.S. Senate seat (Associated Press Decision Notes, September 7, 2026). That is a real American machine. It prints names. It does not print vibes.

Inside Elections moved the general election to Toss Up on September 3 (Washington Examiner, September 4, 2026). Cook and Sabato still say Lean Democrat. RealClearPolitics lists a Tossup. Decision Desk HQ still says Likely Democrat (Wikipedia ratings table, September 6, 2026). Four named shops. More than one answer. I will not invent a fifth.

The primary numbers are not a secret

University of New Hampshire fieldwork from late August put John E. Sununu at 60 percent and Scott Brown at 20 percent in the Republican primary (270toWin citing UNH, August 26, 2026). The same wave put Chris Pappas at 47 percent and Karishma Manzur at 34 percent on the Democratic side (270toWin, August 26, 2026). Associated Press put Pappas near $15.4 million raised and about $4.3 million cash on hand, against Manzur near $415,000 raised. Sununu had about $4.1 million raised and $3.0 million remaining. Brown had about $2.2 million raised and $417,000 remaining (Associated Press, September 7, 2026).

Americans for Prosperity Action has already spent at least $3.3 million supporting Sununu and opposing Pappas since June 30 (Associated Press, September 7, 2026). That is general election money before Tuesday's canvass. I will score the filing. I will not confuse it with a finished seat.

The trial heat is close. That is why the rating moved.

UNH had Sununu at 45 and Pappas at 43 in a late August general election trial heat (Washington Examiner, September 4, 2026; Roll Call, September 4, 2026). Saint Anselm still had Pappas ahead 48 to 41 in mid August (270toWin, August 20, 2026). RealClearPolling's average spanning March to late August put Pappas at 45.3 and Sununu at 43.3 (RealClearPolling, 2026). A two point edge either way inside ordinary survey noise is why one handicapper moved to Toss Up. It is not why I would call the race finished.

Our ranking of 2026 Senate races keeps New Hampshire on the same ruler as North Carolina, Maine, Texas, Michigan, and every other competitive seat. Democrats need a net gain of four for majority control in 2027. New Hampshire is a Democratic held open seat in a state Harris carried by about 2.8 points in 2024. Republicans have not won a Senate race there since 2010 (Associated Press, September 7, 2026). Those are receipts. They are not a prophecy.

The approval table deserves the same honesty

The Financial Times/Focaldata survey fielded August 28 to September 1 printed Trump job approval at 33 percent among registered voters, the lowest reading in that series since May (Financial Times, September 6, 2026). Nearly two thirds said the economy was heading the wrong way. Fifty seven percent said they were financially worse off. Fifty three percent of Republicans approved of his handling of jobs and the economy, down nearly eight points month over month (Financial Times, September 6, 2026).

I will not stop at the gloomiest row. Aggregators updated September 6 average near 37.8 percent approve (Wikipedia aggregator table, September 6, 2026). RealClearPolitics printed 39.8. Decision Desk HQ printed 39.4. Rasmussen's Monday tracker printed 43 percent approve among likely voters (Rasmussen Reports, September 7, 2026). Meet the Press cited 36 percent among adults (NBC Meet the Press, September 6, 2026). Friday's jobs print still showed 162,000 August payrolls and unemployment at 4.1 percent (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, September 4, 2026).

Read the whole board. That is the Black Intervention rule I apply to politics the same way I apply it to a crossword grid. One square is not the puzzle.

What I will watch tomorrow, and what I will refuse to invent

I will watch the New Hampshire canvass for nominees. I will watch whether Cook or Sabato move after the primary, and whether Inside Elections holds Toss Up. I will watch the next MAGA Inc. and America PAC filings for whether Saturday's Texas $10 million becomes a wider Senate wave. I will watch the next approval aggregators the same way I watch a jobs revision: dated, cited, and never alone on the page.

The New York Times reported Sunday that some New Hampshire Democrats are already sounding an alarm about November even while Pappas remains the clear primary favorite (The New York Times, September 6, 2026). Pappas told Roll Call the seat is a building block Democrats cannot afford to lose because the national Senate math does not work without it (Roll Call, September 4, 2026). That is a named candidate describing named arithmetic. It still is not a certified chair.

Fifty seven days. One primary tomorrow. A 33 percent FT approval row sitting beside a 38 percent aggregator average and a 43 percent Rasmussen tracker. A two point Senate trial heat in both directions depending on which university you open. Campaign cash that already shows a serious general election. Outside spending already aimed at November. Rasmussen's early September generic ballot still put Democrats ahead by five points nationally (Rasmussen Reports, September 2, 2026). National mood and one state's school gym are different instruments. Keep them labeled.

Cheer the country that can open a school gym on a Tuesday and publish the count. Cheer the handicappers who moved a seat when the evidence earned it and the ones who held Lean Democrat when their sheets still said so. Cheer the Democrat who raised the money and the Republican who leads one university trial heat. Then keep the crossings honest. A republic that scores both parties by the same ruler is still doing the hard, ordinary work of self government. I will be here when the next receipt lands.
