Times Siena Puts Democrats Ahead or Even in Five Trump States for Senate
New York Times and Siena University polls of likely voters show Democratic leads or ties in Alaska, Texas, Ohio, Kansas, and Iowa, while the Senate Leadership Fund pauses North Carolina ads and books seven figure Kansas airtime, 30 days before November 3.
Times Siena Senate margins likely voters Oct 2026
Five state polls land with thirty days on the clock
The New York Times and Siena University released Senate polls of likely voters in five states President Trump carried by double digits in 2024. Democrat Mary Peltola leads Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan 50 to 43 in Alaska. Democrat James Talarico leads Republican Ken Paxton 51 to 45 in Texas. Democrat Sherrod Brown leads Republican Sen. Jon Husted 49 to 46 in Ohio. Democrat Adam Hamilton and Republican Sen. Roger Marshall sit even at 45 each in Kansas. Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson leads Democrat Josh Turek 48 to 47 in Iowa (New York Times / Siena University, September 21 to October 1, 2026; Siena Research Institute, October 3, 2026).
Those five states are not swing mythology. They are Trump country by recent presidential margins. Nate Cohn wrote that Democrats have been tied or ahead since Labor Day in nearly every nonpartisan poll of Texas, Alaska, Ohio, Iowa, and Kansas (New York Times Upshot, October 3, 2026). Put the board next to our pages on Senate races 2026 and what history says about the 2026 midterm House. A poll is a receipt. A ballot is still the finish.
Margins, samples, and what even actually means
Siena interviewed about 600 likely voters in Iowa, Ohio, Texas, and Kansas, and about 504 in Alaska, by live telephone between September 21 and October 1. Margins of error run about 4.5 points in Texas and Ohio, about 4.6 in Iowa and Kansas, and about 5.1 in Alaska (Siena Research Institute, October 3, 2026; The Hill, October 3, 2026). Ohio, Iowa, and Kansas therefore sit inside the error band even when one candidate prints a one to three point edge.
Read the table all the way down. A seven point Alaska lead and a six point Texas lead are clearer signals than a one point Iowa edge. Kansas at 45 to 45 is not a Democratic Senate win. It is a state that has not elected a Democratic senator since 1932 printing a dead heat in a major academic poll (New York Times, October 3, 2026). America can hold a century without a Democratic Kansas senator and still publish an even race thirty days out. That is a competitive republic, not a finished chamber.
Cash moves when the map moves
On October 2 the Senate Leadership Fund, the top Republican Senate super PAC, paused further North Carolina ad spending and opened a seven figure Kansas buy for Sen. Roger Marshall (NBC News, October 2, 2026; CNN, October 2, 2026; Semafor, October 2, 2026). AdImpact tracked more than $8 million in SLF Kansas airtime reservations and more than $17 million spent by the group in North Carolina in September alone. SLF had already spent more than $30 million boosting Republican Michael Whatley against former Gov. Roy Cooper in the open North Carolina seat (NBC News, October 2, 2026; POLITICO, October 2, 2026).
Axios reported Republican groups spent about $53 million on the North Carolina Senate race in September against about $44 million for Democrats, then began canceling October reservations as polls kept Whatley behind (Axios Raleigh, October 2, 2026). A person familiar with SLF told Semafor the job is to maintain the majority and that the pivot reflects the most effective use of resources (Semafor, October 2, 2026). Money leaving a battleground for a deep red lean is itself a rating without a letter grade. Pair it with most competitive House districts 2026.
House targets widen while Senate math stays four seats
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee added eight districts to its flip list on Friday, pushing its "districts in play" count to 66, nearly double the end of the 2024 cycle. The new targets include Kansas 2, Michigan 1, North Carolina 13, New Jersey 2, Oklahoma 5, Virginia 6, Washington 5, and Texas 9 (New York Times, October 3, 2026; Washington Examiner, October 2, 2026).
Cook Political Report still rates seven Senate races as Toss Ups as of its September 23 board: Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Texas, with North Carolina Lean Democrat and Kansas Lean Republican (Cook Political Report Senate ratings, September 23, 2026; The Guardian summary of Cook as of October 1, 2026). Democrats need a net gain of four seats for a Senate majority while Republicans hold 53 seats today (The Guardian, October 2, 2026). Crystal Ball managing editor Kyle Kondik told Al Jazeera there is more drama in the Senate than the House with about thirty days left, and the clearinghouse still forecasts Democrats winning about 5 to 15 House seats (Al Jazeera, October 3, 2026).
What the numbers settle and what November still owns
Settled from this weekend's instruments: Times Siena shows Democratic leads in Alaska and Texas Senate races, a Brown edge in Ohio, a Kansas tie, and a one point Hinson edge in Iowa among likely voters (Siena, October 3, 2026). Settled from the cash ledger: SLF paused North Carolina October ads after more than $30 million already spent and booked seven figure Kansas airtime (NBC News, October 2, 2026). Settled from Cook: seven Toss Ups and a four seat Democratic net needed for the Senate (Cook, September 23, 2026).
Still open: whether late breakers in North Carolina reverse the SLF pause, whether Kansas stays even through early vote, and whether a soft September jobs print of 29,000 payrolls and a 4.2 percent unemployment rate weigh more than arena rallies in the final month (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, October 2, 2026). Score the polls. Score the ad buys. Leave the canvass to the voters who still have thirty days to finish the grid.
