America PAC Discloses About $800,000 in First Midterm Independent Expenditures

A first filing, not a finished war chest

Late Wednesday, September 2, 2026, America PAC disclosed its first independent expenditures of the 2026 general election cycle. Reporting by POLITICO and CBS News put the August total at roughly $800,000 across key House and Senate races (POLITICO, September 2, 2026; CBS News, September 3, 2026). The Federal Election Commission form linked by CBS lists the committee as C00879510. The disclosed Senate line items alone sum to about $712,393 before House printing is counted.

That is an opening ledger, not a season total. The New York Times reported in July that Musk had authorized America PAC to spend $100 million to $120 million on a midterm field program (The New York Times, July 30, 2026). Print the August receipt. Do not invent November from it.

Where the Senate dollars went

CBS News published the August Senate independent expenditure amounts by state: Texas $247,595; Maine $170,224.29; Ohio $105,675; New Hampshire $91,458.50; Iowa $54,600; Michigan $25,605; Alaska $17,235 (CBS News, September 3, 2026). POLITICO reported the same map of targets and put Texas over $247,000 as the largest single state share (POLITICO, September 2, 2026). Those seven states sit on Cook Political Report's competitive Senate board: Texas, Maine, Ohio, Iowa, Michigan, and Alaska as Toss Ups on the August 20 sheet, with New Hampshire Lean Democrat (Cook Political Report Senate ratings, August 20, 2026).

All of the Wednesday disclosed spending was categorized as printing, pointing to mail rather than television (CBS News, September 3, 2026). Separately, AdImpact and Facebook ad library records showed more than $207,000 in America PAC digital ads in Texas, Michigan, New Hampshire, and Maine (CBS News, September 3, 2026). Mail and digital are different tools. Both are public.

House seats and the Johnson meeting

POLITICO reported nearly $90,000 into eight House races: Rep. Derrick Van Orden in Wisconsin; Rep. Mike Lawler in New York; Rep. Jen Kiggans in Virginia; Rep. Tom Kean Jr. in New Jersey; Rep. Scott Perry in Pennsylvania; Rep. Rob Bresnahan in Pennsylvania; Rep. Ryan Mackenzie in Pennsylvania; and Scott Singer in Florida (POLITICO, September 2, 2026). House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed to CBS News that he had met with Musk during a Texas campaign swing and declined to detail whether midterm spending was discussed (CBS News, September 3, 2026).

Republicans already hold a fundraising edge that includes President Donald Trump's MAGA Inc. super PAC, which public reporting has placed near $400 million available (POLITICO, September 2, 2026; NBC News midterm live updates, September 2, 2026). America PAC spent more than $239 million helping Republican candidates in 2024, when Musk was the largest individual donor of either party (CBS News, September 3, 2026). A 2025 interview had Musk saying he planned to do a lot less political spending. The August filing is the first public midterm IE ledger since that comment.

What the map says, and what it does not

Cook still rates a Senate battleground of about nine competitive seats, with six Toss Ups and New Hampshire in Lean Democrat among seats up (Cook Political Report, September 1, 2026; August 20 ratings). Democrats need a net plus four for majority control in 2027 because Republicans hold 53 seats and Vice President JD Vance would break a 50 to 50 tie. An $800,000 August printing wave is real money and a small fraction of a nine figure authorization. Texas took the largest share while Ken Paxton faces James Talarico in a Cook Toss Up. Maine's Susan Collins race remains Toss Up. New Hampshire votes in a primary on September 8, five days from this Thursday. Alaska's Dan Sullivan race is Toss Up and drew the smallest Senate line item in the disclosure.

A republic that forces independent expenditure reports into the public file is doing its ordinary work. Readers can cheer or oppose Musk's politics without denying the FEC numbers. The honest American frame is that competitive states now have a documented first wave of mail, that larger checks may follow, and that only November 3 certifies who wins. Sixty one days remain. New Hampshire's primary on September 8 will name nominees before most of that larger authorization, if it arrives, hits mailboxes. Michigan remains the only Democratic held Toss Up on Cook's August 20 sheet. Maine, Ohio, Iowa, Texas, and Alaska remain Republican held Toss Ups on the same sheet. The August printing map already covers that competitive core plus Lean Democrat New Hampshire. That alignment is the story. The dollar total is the footnote until the next FEC form lands.
